Not Enough Champagne

Come for the political analysis, stay for the bad jokes and wrong predictions. Not Enough Champagne is run by Steve Haynes, who in a previous life was a Parliamentary Candidate for the Liberal Democrats, and Cory Hazlehurst, a Labour activist who has written about politics for the New Statesman. We try to work out what the hell is going on with British Politics and take a step back to shed new light on issues most news outlets don't talk about.

Our theme tune is Plucky Good Times by Dave Depper and James Cram designed our logo.

Apr 22, 2018

In this episode, Steve and Cory look back on the Resolutions that we set the main political parties in January. How far have the parties met the arbitrary standards which we set them? Have the Tories worked with the Opposition? Has Labour developed radical policies? Are the Lib Dems able to find a way to be relevant.

Features more explaining of metaphors and wine pouring than most of our episodes.

Apr 15, 2018

In the first of a series of podcasts about the upcoming local elections, Steve and Cory discuss a Bath University study into political ambition. What makes someone more or less likely to seek office, and what can political parties do to make our politicians more representative of society?

Mar 28, 2018

In this Midweek Shot, Steve and Cory discuss the admiration for Russia from many in British Politics on both the left and the right.

Mar 25, 2018

In this episode, Steve and Cory discuss the revelatons about Cambridge Analytica which have broken over the past week. Is what they are doing actually that radical or important? Did they swing the election for Trump? And how do we address the fact that Facebook has so much of our data?

Mar 19, 2018

In this episode, Steve and Cory get ahead of the curve by previewing the upcoming local election campaign. Will the Lib Dems strategy of courting EU Nationals pay off? Will Labour be able to mobilise Momentum (with a small and a big "M") to maximise turnout? Just how bad a night will the Conservatives have? And what is being trialled in various council elections? Listen to find out.

Mar 14, 2018

In this Midweek Shot, Steve and Cory discuss the shift in Brexit policy of both Labour and the Conservatives over the past couple of weeks.

Mar 11, 2018

In this episode, Steve and Cory talk about six problems we learned about this week that will shape Britain and the world in the months and years ahead. Will they be able to talk about Donald Trump without alcohol, and will the Conservatives end austerity? Listen to find out.

Mar 4, 2018

In our very first episode, we talked about whether referendums were a good policy-making tool. Two years and one hundred episodes later, we return to the issue and discuss the idea of many Remain campaigners that there should be a second referendum on Brexit. This seems to be the main idea to stop Britain from leaving the EU - but is this a good idea?

Mar 1, 2018

Steve and Cory discuss the prospect of a third party breaking the two-party grip on British Politics. After yet another centre party is launched and UKIP look for yet another leader, we talk about their chances for success. We also mention the possibility of a Green or Lib Dem revival

Feb 25, 2018

The allegations that Jeremy Corbyn was a Czech secret agent were demonstrably false and only backed up by one dodgy source. So why were they pushed by the media and senior Conservatives for so long? We dissect what the row, and Corbyn's response, tells us about British Politics.

Feb 22, 2018

After a brief holiday Not Enough Champagne is back, and talking about the issues most political podcasts don't have the guts to discuss. Like buses.

What problems are there with the debate over infrastructure in the UK and would Labour's proposed solutions make a difference?

Feb 16, 2018

Not Enough Champagne is taking a very brief holiday, so please enjoy this episode covering the best of our content in 2016, uploaded in full for the first time. We will return with a new episode on Tuesday.

Feb 11, 2018

In this episode, we discuss how a Labour government should outsource public services. Should everything just be brought back in-house, and what exactly is going on at Haringey council?

Our theme tune is Plucky Good Times by Dave Depper, and James Cram designed our logo.

Feb 4, 2018

In this episode, we discuss why Britain has had so many directionless governments over the past 25 years. Are there any parallels between Theresa May's administration and those of Gordon Brown and John Major? If so, what do they tell us about the future of British Politics?

Our theme tune is Plucky Good Times by Dave Depper and James Cram designed our logo.

Jan 21, 2018

In this episode, Steve and Cory discuss Devil's Bargain, Joshua Green's book about Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, 2016 and all that. We talk about how World of Warcraft made Donald Trump Presdent, how he could have run as a different type of Republican (ie not a racist) and the bullshit factory that is Breitbart news.

***Minor correction: In the intro we say that Bannon called Trump Jr's meeting with the Russians treasonous, evil and wrong. He didn't say it was evil, but did call it unpatriotic.***

Also, this was recorded a couple of weeks ago, which in Trump terms is about 43 years. So there's no references to the government shut down or Trump's remarks about various African countries.

Jan 12, 2018

We taked about Article 50 in 2016, and the divorce bill in 2017, so what will the big issues about Brexit be which we talk about this year?

Our theme tune is Plucky Good Times by Dave Depper and our logo is designed by James Cram.

Jan 10, 2018

In this Midweek Shot, Steve and Cory attempt to think who they think will be the most influential players in British Politics this year.

Jan 7, 2018

A new year brings a new series of Not Enough Champagne. In this episode, we discuss what the resolutions should be for Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn. Will the Conservatives be able to stop making everything about Brexit and build a new agenda? Can Labour get Momentum to organise for the local elections? Also, can the Liberal Democrats find a way to make themselves relevant. Listen to find out what else should happen (but probably won't) in 2018.

Dec 31, 2017

Two teams of political heavyweights trade blows in the highly anticipated Not Enough Champagne end of year quiz. Steve and Cory are joined by Luke John Davies, John Cotton and Brigid Jones for a final time to sort-of review 2017.

Our theme tune is Plucky Good Times by Dave Depper and James Cram designed our logo.

(One again, we apologies for the slightly echoey nature of this podcast. It will be fixed in next week's episode.)

Dec 21, 2017

Steve and Cory are once again joined by John Cotton, Brigid Jones and Luke John Davies for a chat about all the things we have not managed to talk about on the podcast this year. We discuss the persecution of the Rohingya, authoritarianism in Eastern Europe, Catalonia, and of course whether we are going to die in a nuclear war.

(we apologise again for the echoy nature of this episode. Normal service will resume in 2018)

Our logo is designed by James Cram. Dave Depper wrote our theme tune.
